The Victorian Government’s Never Leave Kids in Cars awareness campaign reminds parents that their most precious valuables — their children — should never be left alone in the car.
Children can and do die in hot cars — and the risk is highest in summer. The temperature inside a parked car can be 20 to 30 degrees hotter than outside — so even on a 25 degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach a scorching 55 degrees. In Victoria it is against the law to leave a child unattended in a car, with penalties including fines, or up to six months’ jail.
The Never Leave Kids in Cars campaign prompts parents to take their kids with them whenever they get out of the car, just as they do their everyday valuables, to avoid potentially tragic consequences.
